- Casual employees are hired on an irregular basis, as needed. They can work as many hours as agreed.
- Casual workers have no expectation of ongoing employment
- They are free to refuse offers of work
- They have no personal leave, sick leave or annual leave entitlement
- They are paid a loading (a minimum of 20%, but some awards pay higher loading) to compensate for the lack of leave
- They may also work for more than one employer at a time
