Introduction §
- We all know that to say that we did something, we use ます.
- But when you are referring to something you did in the past, we use ました.
- This even applies to questions, where we can say ましたか
Example §
- しゅくだいをします。(I am doing homework.)
- しゅくだいをしました。(I did homework.)
- しゅくだいをしましたか？ (Did you do homework?)

- どこに行きましたか？ (Where did you go?)
- 何をしましたか？ (What did you do?)
- だれとしましたか？ (Who did you go with?)
Past tense with negatives (verbs and adjectives) §

- します -> しました (do > did)
- ません -> ませんでした (won’t do > didn’t do)
い positive (adjective) §
- Simply drop い and add かったです
- うるさい -> うるさかったです (annoying > was annoying)
い negative (adjective) §
- Drop い and add くないです
- Drop い and add かったです。
- Final: くなかったです
- Example: うるさくなかったです (was not annoying)
な positive (adjective) §
- Simply add でした.
- きれいでした (Was beautiful)
- The な adjective rules also applies to nouns (eg. 先生でした, was a teacher)
な negative (adjective) §
- Add じゃないです.
- Drop い and add かったです.
- きれいじゃなかったです。(was not beautiful)
