First 10 days


Dates are slightly complicated. The first 10 dates are completely different and new, however they use a familiar same numerical kanji, then にち format. On top of this, the 14th, 20th and 24th day are in a slightly different format.

  • 1st day: 一日いちにち
  • 2nd day: 二日ふつか
  • 3rd day: 三日みっか
  • 4th day: 四日よっか
  • 5th day: 五日いつか
  • 6th day: 六日むいか
  • 7th day: 七日なのか
  • 8th day: 八日ようか
  • 9th day: 九日ここのか
  • 10th day: 十日とおか
  • 14th day: 十四日じゅうよっか
  • 20th day: 二十日はつか
  • 24th day: 二十四日にじゅうよっか

The rest of the calendar


The rest are pretty straightforward; stating the number, then にち.

For example, the 11th is 十一日じゅういちにち.

Question structure


When asking when something is, you can use いつ.

Asking for just date: Q: きょうはなんにちですか What is today’s date?

Q: きょうは (date) です。 Today is (date).

Asking for full date: Q: きょうはなんがつなんにちですか What is today’s month and date?

Q: きょうは (month) (date) です。 Today is (month), (date).

Asking for full date, with day: Q: きょうはなんがつなんにち何曜日なんようびですか What is today’s month, date, and day?

Q: きょうは (month) (date) (day) です。 Today is (month), (date), and it is (day).
